For lighting the Lego Star Wars snowspeeder I used two rectangular lights and a skylight. The picture below shows the positioning of the lights and the camera.
I used most of the default settings of finalRender. The only changes I made were to the anti aliasing settings and disabling the global illumination. Rendering took about 10 minutes on a dual Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz pc with 2GB of memory.
